Poor Law Index. (C002)

The CD contains a searchable list of all the names appearing in the documents together with the reference of the document held in the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies. Listed are a significant number of families who move in and out of the County to counties throughout the UK.

The importance of poor law records to family and local historians cannot be over emphasised; settlement certificates can explain and amplify why a person appears in a certain place; examination before parish officials can give a detailed resume of the family history of those being interrogated; removal of family units, and indeed individuals, to places sometimes many miles distant from the previously known source can be determined and bastardy bonds can solve problems of paternity which cannot otherwise be unravelled.
