Extra charges for certificates

It has recently been asked if it is in order for a local register office to impose an administration charge in addition to the standard cost of £7 for a birth, marriage or death certificate. This question has been put to the General Register Office at Southport.

Overseas Birth, Death & Marriage Records at the TNA

The National Archives has today announced that records from the General Register Office: Miscellaneous Foreign Returns, 1831-1964 (RG 32) have been added to the online service at BMD Registers Searching the records is free, but there is a charge to download images of the original documents.

Irish Census Online

All counties have now been added to the National Archives of Ireland's free 1911 census website. The 1901 and 1911 censuses are the only surviving full censuses of Ireland open to the public. Both censuses cover the entire island of Ireland. The 1911 census was taken on 2 April 1911.

Queensland Convict Lists

The State Library of Queensland has just re-released the British Convict Transportation Registers Database (over 123,000 convicts sent to Australia between 1787 and 1867).

 

British Newspapers Online

The British Library, in conjunction with Gale, Cengage Learning have many newspapers online at http://newspapers.bl.uk/blcs/. There are 47 titles available giving coverage of London, England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland from 1800 to 1900. Two of the newpapers, the Penny Illustrated Paper and The Graphic can be viewed free of charge. Many public libraries have a subscription either on-site or from home.
