Kevin Varty: Churchyards, Cemeteries and the Victorians

hearse2The Victorians had a preoccupation with death which is hard for us to understand. Many churchyards were full and in a terrible state. This talk shows the effects that the opening of new cemeteries had on Victorian attitudes to death and mourning and illustrates the incredible growth of the funeral industry. All the items of mourning jewellery and funeral ephemera on display are original.
