Below are listed just a selection of sites you might find useful.


The National Archives

  The National Archives are making more records available on-line. Generally the index searches are free but there is a fee to see the image of the document ( If you visit Kew and search on their machines the images may be viewed without charge and printed for normal photocopying charges

Federation of Family History Societies
The umbrella organisation for many family history societies. They maintain a list of member societies if your interests lie outside Buckinghamshire. The Federation also operates Family History On Line which contains over 66 million records. Bucks FHS contributes some records

Mormons- Church of the Latter Day Saints - Family Search

The Church has a free site with the IGI, 1881 Census, Vital records all searchable by name.

Free BMD
  A group of volunteers is entering the data from the GRO indexes of all births, deaths & marriages from 1837 to the present day. The index is not complete but if you find your ancestor it could save you a trip to the library or London.




Ordering Certificates On-line
  It now costs the same to order a certificate on line as it does to go to London and order them. For more information about certificates try the Registering Life Events site



Scotlands People
  The Scottish record system is different. Scotland has one of the most complete on-line systems. You need to register and pay for viewing the certificates




Familia

  The site is devoted to an index of resources held in the major libraries of the UK





Access to Archives

The A2A database contains catalogues describing archives held throughout England and dating from the 900s to the present day. It is searchable by name. The site does not yet cover the whole of England and will only tell you where the archives are held



Surname Distribution
  You can see the results of an academic survey into the distribution of surnames in the UK.




Genuki -British & Irish Genealogy

  The Genuki site has information about each county, including record offices, publications, parishes etc




Cyndi's List

The site lists gives links to various genealogical sites but many are American



Genealogy Today(UK Edition)

  The site has Newsletters, Advice and Databases all with a UK bias



Genes Reunited

  Devoted to help you find other people researching your family and sharing your research with others.




Guild of One Name Studies

  This is an organisation for people making a study of a specific name. It is worth looking here to see if someone else has already researched your name
