The Award has been introduced to commemorate the life of Alan Dell who made such a great contribution the Society as President, long-serving committee member and award-winning editor of Origins, the Society magazine.

Now accepting entries from all writing about Family History & Local History with an emphasis on Buckinghamshire.

The award will be presented annually to the person who, in the view of a judging panel on behalf of the Executive Committee, produces the best original article for inclusion in Origins. The article may be on any genealogical topic of educational value but preference will be given to one with high Buckinghamshire relevance.

The recommended article length is between 500 and 1500 words.

The decision of the judges will be announced at the Annual General Meeting of the Society and the winner will receive a prize of £50.00 (GBP), There will be runner's up prize of £25 (GBP). The AGM is usually held in May each year.

 

  • The winning article will be published in Origins. Any other suitable entries may also be published in Origins after the winner has been announced.

Rules and guidelines

  1. There is no need to be a member of Buckinghamshire Family History Society. Names of the entrants are not revealed to the judges before judging.

  2. Entries submitted must be clearly marked as for entry to the Alan Dell Memorial Award.
  3. All entries must be submitted to the Editor of Origins either by:

    1. Email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. as a MS Word document attachment (or equivalent) with any accompanying photographs or illustrations also attached as separate image files; or

    2. Hard copy by post to:
      Buckinghamshire FHS, Box 2 c/o Ace Storage, Unit 7 Broadfields, Aylesbury, Bucks HP19 8BU.
      Please include an SAE for return of any documents or for receipt of an entry. The Society cannot be held responsible for the loss of any original documents, so scanned documents sent by email is always recommended.

      Please retain a copy of your entry for your records.

  4. All entries must be the original work of the author and be previously unpublished in any format.

  5. The article may be on any genealogical topic of educational value but preference will be given to one with high Buckinghamshire relevance.

  6. The recommended word count for entries is between approximately 500 and 1,500 words.

  7. Illustrations and photographs must be submitted as separate files, be the author's own or have written permission for reproduction from the owner.

  8. Each member can submit up to three entries per year. Articles cannot be resubmitted.

  9. The closing date for entries is 31st December each calendar year. Late entries will be included in the following year's competition.

  10. The winner shall be decided by a judging panel on behalf of and selected by the Editor & Executive Committee after the closing date of 31st December and announced at the following AGM of the Society.

  11. The decision of the judges is final.

  12. In the event that no entry of suitable standard is received by the deadline, the prize shall not be awarded for that year.

  13. The winning article shall be published in Origins and other Society media.

  14. Any submitted entry may be published in Origins and other Society media.

  15. The cash first prize of £50.00 (fifty GB pounds) or the equivalent in the winner's local currency shall be paid by bank transfer.

  16. The cash second prize of £25.00 (twenty five GB pounds) or the equivalent in the winner's local currency shall be paid by bank transfer.
  17. Articles from members of the current Executive Committee are not eligible for entry.
